According to foreign media, Zhang Ziguang was scheduled to attend a ceremony in the British Parliament today, but after protests from members, Speaker Sir Lindsey Hawley and Lord Speaker McPhail decided not to allow the Chinese ambassador.
It is believed that China has taken action against several British MP's who made statements about alleged human rights violations in Xinjiang province and banned them from entering the country.
The decision by the British Parliament to ban the Chinese ambassador is being seen as a response to this. Last week, five members of the Conservative Party, including Sir Lian Duncan Smith, Tom Taggandheit, Nusrat Ghani, Neil O'Brien, and Tim Logan, wrote a letter to the speaker protesting the Chinese ban.
The letter written by the members to the Speaker said that the recent move by China was an attack not only on us but also on the British Parliament. This has violated the rights of all parliamentarians.
"We can never allow a representative of a country that has tolerated such actions against us to use its platform," the British letter said.
